I have suffered with outbreaks of spots around my chin area regularly, and as a 24 year old and no longer a teenager, with a job which is customer facing I was becoming frustrated and annoyed with my skin!
I had tried numerous things to help, I have altered my diet and tried new skincare products which had made some impact, but I knew I needed to do something else to clear them up.
When I met Dr Linda Eve, she had a good look at my skin and she advised me that a Salicylic peel would be the best treatment for me due to my outbreak of spots.
As an award-winning specialist doctor I couldn’t wait to try the new sk:n clinic in Bournemouth and see what the peel would do for me.
First of all I was told what to expect and also about the peel, Salicylic acid comes from the Latin salix, meaning, ‘willow tree’ the bark of which used to be the source of the active. It is a colourless, crystalline substance with exceptional anti-inflammatory properties which is also used in the production of aspirin. (For that reason, if you have an aspirin allergy, you need to alert your practitioner). It can also be found in many fruits, such as blackberries, blueberries, dates, grapes, kiwi fruits and apricots which may give your skin a boost for additional reasons to also being loaded with anti-oxidants.
For anyone with mild acne, Salicylic acid helps unclog pores to resolve and prevent lesions, it helps to correct the abnormal shedding of cells and works by breaking up the cells that stick together to block blackheads and whiteheads, banishing blemishes and promoting clearer skin. Being an anti-inflammatory, it also soothes stressed out skin, reducing redness and calming breakouts and angry complexions.
I must admit that the thought of a skin peel sounded daunting, peeling off my skin! Do not worry it isn’t as brutal as you might think. Sophie the practitioner at the sk:n clinic on Christchurch road, Bournemouth made me feel completely at ease and relaxed and she talked me through the whole process.
I put on my trendy clear surgical cap to pull back my hair and cover my ears, and I was ready to go. (see photo)
Sophie cleansed my face, and then applied the peel, avoiding sensitive areas of the face such as the lips.
After just a few minutes, my skin started to heat up and I felt a slight burning sensation (which is completely normal during the process) and the peel was activated. Sophie cooled my face with a fan to reduce the impact of the heat and keep me comfortable and relaxed. After 3 minutes had passed, the peel had left behind a white precipitate of Salicylic acid on the surface of my face which is termed as ‘Salicylic acid frost’.
Sophie then wiped off the peel with a cotton pad, and I was placed under the sk:n DermaLux machine. This gives out a warm red LED light and is used to reduced forms of acne. Voted ‘Treatment of the Year’ for 4 consecutive years, Dermalux combines clinically proven wavelengths of light with the latest generation LED technology to deliver results for a wide range of skin conditions without discomfort or downtime. This was very relaxing and known as a ‘healthy sunbed’ – it was so relaxing that I almost fell asleep, for 20mins so it’s perfect for a cat nap!
Instantly after coming out from under the machine, I was told by my friends that my skin looked more vibrant and clearer!
I felt a tightness and smoothness immediately post-peel and after two days, as predicted by Sophie from the sk:n team, my skin started to peel most especially around the nose and the chin area which were the most affected by spots and redness which peeled first. Once my sk:n had stopped peeling I am delighted to say that my spots have significantly reduced and my face looks and feels fresher, and my pores are unclogged.
I would highly recommend the treatment if you have spots, it’s been great for me and I look and feel a lot better about my skin now. sk:n Bournemouth have treatments to suit every skin condition. They also have a range of aftercare products and are happy to give advice and have a chat with anybody. I am using the sk:n skincare products which are also helping and I will be back for another peel and other treatments in the future!
